How We Acquire Our Adoptable Dogs
In line with our mission, we source adoptable dogs of all sizes and breeds from kill shelters around the country by partnering with like-minded rescue operations and shelters. Once dogs have been identified for Grammy Rose, they receive any required shots and are transported to Maine. Sometimes the transport comes straight to the rescue to hand off its precious cargo, and at other times we meet transports around New England with our customized transport van and handle the “last mile” transport directly to Grammy Rose. Dogs coming from out of state go through a 5-day quarantine period and are then posted on our website and Facebook page for adoption.
LaMa Animal Rescue Partnership
In 2023, Grammy Rose partnered with LaMa Animal Rescue located in rural northwest Louisiana. Our mission at Grammy Rose is to save dogs from euthanasia while providing a safe-haven and a second chance for the numerous
abandoned and abused dogs desperate for a loving home.
LaMa Animal rescue is a small group of volunteers in Webster Parish, Louisiana, that work tirelessly to save the countless animals that are hungry and hopeless. With less than ten fosters and relying heavily on boarding facilities, LaMa typically has eighty to one hundred dogs in their care and work with five partner shelters within the New England states to find forever homes.
The situation in Louisiana is dire and the resources are few. The lack of responsible pet ownership is a constant challenge for LaMa and they strive to educate and inform the importance of spay and neuter as well as proper vetting. Daily, adult dogs and puppies are abandoned on country roads or left to find food and shelter in the streets of the small town. The resources are stretched, neglect and abuse cases are addressed by the one animal control officer for the entire parish. There is no state or local funding for LaMa and they rely solely on fundraising and donations. The burden to find room for the next litter of puppies or the next dog with medical needs is constant. Without the volunteers in Louisiana and the amazing staff at Grammy Rose many of these precious souls would be euthanized or left to struggle alone. Louisiana is one of the top five states with the highest number of dogs euthanized. Over 32,000 dogs a year are never given the chance to find a loving home.
Each dog is vetted and healthy before they make the long journey to Maine. Unaware that they are about to be welcomed into a home-like setting when they arrive at Grammy Rose, the staff greets each one individually with affection and a safe haven.
Grammy Rose has successfully matched and placed over 244 dogs from LaMa Rescue, to be forever family members and live their best life in our beautiful state of Maine.
